Legislators will retake discussion to protect sharks

The Frente Amplio faction, through Congressman Ariel Robles Barrantes, presented a new law initiative to protect shark species in danger of extinction from commercial fishing.

The initiative, file #24.496, “Law to Protect Sharks in Danger of Extinction,” proposes to modify the fourth paragraph of article one of the Wildlife Conservation Law. The initiative was presented due to the filing of file #21.754, presented by the previous legislature’s deputy, Paola Vega Rodríguez, on December 17, 2023, due to the expiration of its four-year term.

“Sharks are worth more alive than dead; they are essential species for the ocean’s health on which all human beings depend; it is not a whim or a luxury but a necessity. We urge the legislature to support this initiative to promote the conservation and proper management of endangered sharks by recognizing them as protected species under the Wildlife Conservation Law,” said Magie Rodriguez, Advocacy Manager of Fundación MarViva, the organization behind the initiative.
