MarViva Foundation presents “Vote for the ocean: a decision that protects our future,” an electoral guide that aims to ensure that the protection and sustainable use of the oceans are on the next government’s agenda.
Costa Rica has a unique marine wealth that sustains biodiversity, fishing, tourism, and the culture of its coastal communities. However, threats such as overfishing, pollution, and climate change put this valuable natural heritage at risk. The guide offers concrete tools to strengthen marine institutions, promote a sustainable blue economy, and ensure the participation of coastal communities in decisions that affect their future.
“If the ocean is not a priority on the next administration’s agenda, we will be putting at risk not only our biodiversity, but also the economy, food security, and well-being of thousands of coastal families. This guide seeks to empower voters and leaders to make responsible decisions for our seas”, said Katherine Arroyo Arce, executive director of MarViva.
The organization recommends moving toward responsible and competitive fisheries management, implementing extended producer responsibility schemes, and promoting national scientific research programs.
MarViva hopes that this guide will inspire political parties to make the marine agenda a priority in the decisions of the next government. The complete publication is available for consultation and free download here
