Over 500 kilometers away from the mainland, Coco`s Island is a paradise surrounded by crystal clear waters. It is recognized as being in one of the most biodiverse oceanic regions in the world.
The Island is a site of convergence for migratory pelagic marine species that arrive at its waters to complete stages of their life cycles. This makes it a key site for the region’s maintenance and conservation of marine reserves.
To strengthen and supplement the surveillance and control systems of the Coco Marine Conservation Area (Área de Conservación Marina Coco), a new radar arrives on the island that will protect its adjacent waters with modern technology. Characterized by its next generation antenna design, with novel signal processing techniques, this radar will protect the waters surrounding the island from threats such as illegal fishing and other illicit activities.
“This radar represents a step in the right direction because if we want to manage the ocean and the resources it provides us properly, it is essential to strengthen monitoring, control, and surveillance, especially in remote areas like this one”, said Katherine Arroyo, Executive Director of MarViva Foundation.
The tool has a special antenna to detect boats, with a range of approximately 178 kilometers in diameter and the capacity to capture high-resolution images.
Thanks to this investment of more than 90 thousand dollars, species such as sharks, billfish, fish, and dolphins will benefit from heightened protection.
