MARVIVA FOUNDATION PRESENTS CAMPAIGN TO PROMOTE THE CONSUMPTION OF SHARK FREE CEVICHE

Concerned about the situation of overfishing suffered by some species of the sea and to promote fishing, trade, and responsible consumption, the MarViva Foundation launched a campaign to encourage the seal called “Shark Free Ceviche “1, which invites the consumer of ceviche to look for it in restaurants and supermarkets, and thus enjoy this culinary delight of Panamanian cuisine, without having to affect endangered species, such as sharks.

Katherine Arroyo, executive director of Fundación MarViva, explained that the “Shark Free Ceviche” seal is the image of a frame of reference that certifies the fish ceviche product that has not been elasmobranch (sharks and rays) or other fish species in the category of not recommended consumption, in the red list of Fundación MarViva’s Semaphore Guide2.

Vicente Del Cid, MarViva’s Production and Responsible Consumption Manager commented that currently in Panama there are more than 21 points of sale where ceviche products with this seal can be found, such as the restaurant’s El Trapiche, Marea, and Vista Corona, Delicias Peruanas and Rompeolas, and cevichería Donde Luis. At the distributor level are Ocean Gourmet (national level) and Distribuidora Guticor (Panama City). He also pointed out that this campaign is a great opportunity for consumers to be more demanding when it comes to enjoying this product while supporting companies that promote responsible consumption.

Tania Arosemena, MarViva’s Advocacy Manager, commented that in the absence of government policies and regulations governing the capture and commercialization of species so susceptible to being impacted by fishing activities, the Foundation has relied on the power of the people, consumers and businessmen, Through the Shark Free Ceviche seal, they will be able to offer a product so desired by the local palate, with the confidence that no shark or endangered species are being used in its preparation, thus contributing to the conservation of our marine diversity and the health of the oceans.

Finally, Annissamyd Del Cid, MarViva’s Science Manager, highlighted the support provided by the Public Interest Association COIBA AIP3, which carries out genetic analysis of the ceviche samples prepared by the commercial allies, thus guaranteeing the consumer that the protein consumed is not a species threatened with extinction and the trade can continue to use the seal.

The activity gathered many people, including businessmen, authorities, and international delegations, who had the opportunity to enjoy products endorsed with the Ceviche Shark Free seal.
